A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
