The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
