A defence official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in every areas of government operations, including transport use to communication habits.
