The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
